OVERVIEWOF QUAKE AFTERMATH

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4322624.stm

On October 8th, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit northern Pakistan destroying most of the
cities and villages. This earthquake has killed more than 50,000 people, and left
2.5 million homeless. Another 75-100,000 are injured and in need of medical care.
More than 200 hospitals were destroyed with physicians, nurses and patients buried
alive. Countless schools and universities were destroyed with thousands of students
of all ages killed.

This is a monumental disaster of epic proportions. Pakistan is a poor country with limited
resources and cannot deal with this tragedy on its own. Pakistani-Americans are mobilising
their resources, but more help is needed. There is a dire need for food, clothes, medicines
and housing for the survivors.

Themajority of casualties arechildren, crushed under  thecollapse of their schools.Currently, there is no  roadaccess to most of
Kashmir,leaving the area only
accessibleby helicopter totransport support teams,  anddeliver medical and foodsupplies. As a result,
survivors have been digging outother survivors and
the dead,by hand, from beneathcollapsed buildings.  Whilelarger organizations
willhandle casualties, our
donationscan help thesurvivors, who are currently  without shelter, food, water,or medical care.

WHERETO SEND YOUR DONATIONS

There are so many organizations all over the world alreadyout there that do this sort of thing all the time and I think
its best that we combine our resources and efforts to  help themto the job they are already experts at and  trained to do.

I think a good place to start are with groups like the oneslisted below in no particular order.
Please donate generously through the organization of your choice:

    Edhi Foundation

Run by Abdul Sattar Edhi, one of the most respected philanthropists in
Pakistam, Edhi Foundation has a long history of providing welfare
services and emergency relief throughout Pakistan. Mr. Edhi is
personally directing relief efforts from Islamabad right now, and has
told ADP that their helicopters have already begun airlifting supplies
and medicines to the affected areas.

    President's Relief Fund

Given the scale of the disaster and the remoteness of the affected
areas, the government is uniquely positioned to provide immediate
relief. President Musharraf has set up a fund dedicated to earthquake
relief and has encouraged people to contribute to the effort. He has
also guaranteed complete transparency and accountability in the use of
funds great work everyone, Pak Relief has made pakpridelive.com the
home page to direct people to all sorts of places, basically a one stop
resource of what you can do and how you can do it. The Embassy of
Pakistan has also started to refer people to this site, so I will too.
Donate to any agency collecting funds, ESP. Those that are sending to
the President's fund as that money is going direct to where it's needed.

take the time and go over the situation and see what you can do.

HOW TO GET YOUR EMPLOYER TO MATCH YOUR DONATIONS

In the UK, people should remember to tick the 'gift aid' box when donating - this means that the charity
will also claim the amount in tax that would otherwise go to the Govt. It makes a big difference!

Before making direct financial donations to earthquake related charities, please check with your
employers (usually HR departments) to see if the employer will match your contribution. If your
employer has such a program, it makes sense to channel your donations through your employers.

Please note that in order to take tax savings, employer may require that charities are incorporated
as 501 (c) 3 - not-for-profit institutions. All donations to such organizations may be tax deductible
    as permitted by law.

The following two US based Pakistani organizations are incorporated as 501 (c) and are actively seeking donations
for Earthquake victims. Both of the organizations have great credibility, and are managed by Pakistanis who believe
in the purpose of these organizations.

The first organization is: The Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA). They
have established the "APPNA Earthquake Relief Fund 2005." They can be reached at 6414 S. Cass Avenue,
    Westmont, IL, 60559 TEL: 630-968-8585,

    E-Mail:

    appna@appna.org

The second potential organization is Human Development Foundation. They are also collecting donations and are
a 501 (c) organization. HDF contact information is:

I know a lot of us work for leading organizations and would love to contribute. All we have to do is simply

I would focus on sending money at this time. Believe it or not relief
    supplies have a shelf life
and deteriorate over time and under varying conditions.
That combined with minute by minute changing needs and conditions means that
    organizations equipped with
money and people on the ground can best handle
logistics for what supplies they need at what time.

Sending donations also means contracting for a container/shipping service,
     putting it on a ship/plane
and it taking anywhere from 5 days to 5 weeks for it
to get to Pakistan and make its way up to the stricken areas.

If you would like to help, please consider making a donation through the Earthquake Relief page atwww.DevelopPakistan.org. This is being run by a non-profit called ADP(Association for the Development of Pakistan) that I have worked withquite actively. The site allows you to donate to Edhi Foundation andthe President's Earthquake Relief Fund, two agencies that are uniquelyqualified to mount the kind of large-scale response that is needed anddon't currently have the ability to collect funds online. All donationsvia the web site are deductible for US tax purposes.

There is also information on howto contribute to other NGOs engaged in relief efforts. Over the courseof the coming days, we will add more information on how we can allrespond to this catastrophe within our communities.

Please forward this e-mailwidely and encourage others to help as well.

If you're in school go to your teachers, professors, principals and start collecting
whatever items or money you can. Obviously donating directly and immediately is
definitely the best action to take. But also look into the workplace perhaps your
company will match whatever money or donations you give which could double your
contribution and hopefully help even more people at same time!!

Do everything you possibly can with your friends, family, neighborhood , community,
workplace and then at the end of the day when your exhausted and its time
to go to bed..go ahead and pray ..pray to God that all your efforts will not go in
vain Inshallah (if it is God's will) ...even if you change one small thing in
one person's life, prolong the inevitable of someone who's already gone too far gone
even if just for a day, put a smile on a child's face who's fate is no better...
take comfort in knowing you made a difference , it came from the heart, you
cared and that in itself is all that matters! Death is inevitable for us all but
let's do what we can to help save the living!

Never underestimate the power of the internet, cut & paste or the individual for
that matter. If I could do this much stuck at work all day you could do a hell of
alot more!! I just sent an email to whomever I thought may be able to give me more
information and it's through all their help I was able to get all this information
together within a few hours. I just hope this helps.

For all those victims, the families and friends of all those who have suffered and
lost from this horrific tragedy may Allah's blessings and mercy be upon us
    all. Amen.
